Three dungeon biomes are confirmed by the developer: the Shallow Dungeon, Overgrown Dungeon, and Darkest Dungeon. Each marks a step down in danger and up in potential loot quality.
Shallow Dungeon
Every venturing shopkeeper begins here. Players of the demo will recognize it, but the full-release version was expanded with new special rooms and enemy variants. Skeletons patrol the halls and establish the core combat and trap-reading rhythm.
Overgrown Dungeon
Nature is reclaiming the old stone floors with bushes, vines, and tall grass. Goblins have displaced the skeleton population and turned the biome into their hideout. Their victory over the undead is the developer's warning not to underestimate them.
Darkest Dungeon
Very little natural light reaches the deepest confirmed biome. Rivers of souls provide an eerie glow, while reanimated adventurers attack the living. Skeletons here are heavily armored and well equipped.
Necromancer threat
Necromancers are described as the apex predators of the Darkest Dungeon. They attack with powerful ranged magic and summon zombie hordes. The official text calls them enemies, not necessarily the zone boss, so a boss guide should not conflate the two.
Rewards and preparation
The farther down you travel, the rarer the loot becomes; the developer describes Darkest Dungeon treasure as the best available. Upgrade weapons, armor, and furniture-backed combat bonuses before treating a newly unlocked biome like the previous one.
Still unconfirmed
Exact floor ranges, biome-specific drop tables, boss identities, special-room catalogs, environmental effects, and whether more biomes exist are pending verification. Use the location nameplates added in Demo 2.0 when documenting the live build.
