Loot is both survival progress and shop inventory. The deeper you travel, the rarer the potential reward; the catch is that death removes everything from the run that has not been safely banked.
Confirmed reward curve
The official store says deeper dungeon travel produces rarer loot. The developer's biome preview describes the Darkest Dungeon as the home of the best treasures. That establishes direction, not exact drop rates or guaranteed items.
Loot sources
Official material confirms dungeon loot, forest foraging, materials, recipes, chests, destructible scenery, and Quest Board rewards. It does not publish a complete source table. Record whether an item came from an enemy, chest, breakable object, room reward, quest, or crafting result.
Patch effects
Demo 2.0.1 reduced potion drops from destructible objects and decreased common-item clutter in chests. A farming route recorded before that update may overstate consumables or inventory volume.
Bank versus push
The central decision is when to leave. Official store information confirms that dying costs the entire unbanked haul. Deeper floors offer rarer rewards, but every extra room increases exposure to enemies and traps.
Treat a safe return as progress; a full inventory has no value until it reaches the shop. Evaluate rarity, replacement value, remaining capacity, health, and knowledge of the next zone. The best theoretical drop is irrelevant if the current haul never returns to the shop.
Use every return
Materials and recipes feed crafting, equipment can support deeper runs, goods can stock displays, and expedition feats may satisfy Quest Board rewards. Sort the haul by its next job instead of selling everything automatically.
Data still needed
Item names, rarity tiers, sell values, biome pools, enemy tables, luck effects, chest weights, and legendary odds are pending. A trustworthy loot database should show source, version, sample size, and uncertainty.
Source standard
Core facts on this page come from the official Steam store and developer announcements. Demo observations are labeled when used. Exact values absent from those sources are not invented.
